Mass vaccinations against the highly questioned so-called "swine flu" have started in Sweden and the hard reality of this mistake is now confronting everyone involved. One big issue for politicians seem to be that they have signed a contract which forced them to purchase a certain amount of vaccine as soon as the WHO declared pandemic level 6. Now, with a mild so-called "swine flu" and a vaccine-hesitant popuation, the amount of vaccine ordered will pile up and soon become a political scandal. Especially since less than half of the population intend to get the shot.
Swedish news paper Aftonbladet writes:
Vaccine mountain in Sweden
Sweden has bought two vaccine shots for every citizen. Only one is needed. Now the local authorities are trying to get rid of the unnecessary vaccine mountain.
18 million doses for over one billion SEK (144 million dollars). That is how much swine flu vaccine Sweden is bound to purchase since it was calculated that two doses would be needed per citizen. But yesterday that all changed reports Sveriges Radio (Swedish state radio).
Only one dose
Now, both manufacturers of the vaccine and experts from World Health Organization, WHO, claim that one dose per person will be enough. For Sweden this means unused medication for half a billion SEK (70 million dollars). But Göran Stjernstedt from Sveriges Kommuner och Landsting, SKL, hopes that the vaccine manufacturers will take back some of all the medication.
"- I presume that we can renegotiate with the company since the conditions have changed. The product delivered is another from the one promised when we signed the agreement" he says to Ekot.
So far, 600 000 doses have arrived to Sweden and are being distributed.
